Once you have decided that joint replacement is the right decision for you, you will be enrolled in the STRIDE total joint replacement program. STRIDE is a comprehensive program focused on patient education and involvement to improve your overall experience and outcome.
The education begins approximately three weeks pre-operatively, when you attend a one and a half hour class focused on explaining the entire joint replacement experience. A nurse and physical therapist will describe in detail how to prepare for the surgery, as well as what to expect in the days following your surgery. A pharmacist will also be present to ensure that all questions regarding medications are answered. Finally, a case manager will meet with each individual patient and set-up a preliminary discharge plan.
There is also an optional pre and post-operative exercise program available through the Magdalena Ecke YMCA in Encinitas. The “First Strides” program is a three week pre-operative and six week post-operative curriculum developed by physical therapists and taught by licensed athletic trainers. A temporary membership to the YMCA is available and access to the entire facility is allowed while enrolled in the program.
After surgery, you can anticipate staying in the hospital for two to three days. During your stay, a multidisciplinary team consisting of doctors, physician assistants, nurses, physical therapists, and other ancillary services will ensure an optimum outcome.
Prior to discharge from the hospital careful steps are taken to ensure that all STRIDE program goals have been met. There is also an optional complimentary hair wash and style provided to make sure that you look and feel your best when beginning your journey with your new joint.
